Julie Plec, co-creator of the hit series The Vampire Diaries, has hinted at the potential for further expansion of the beloved franchise. This news comes despite the conclusion of the original series and its spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies.
Plec, alongside Kevin Williamson, developed the supernatural teen drama based on L. J. Smith’s book series. The show originally aired on The CW from September 10, 2009, to March 10, 2017, spanning 171 episodes over eight seasons. At the premiere of her new Max series, The Girls on The Bus, starring Melissa Benoist, Plec spoke to Screen Rant about her ongoing ideas for The Vampire Diaries universe. Although she didn’t provide specific details, she mentioned the TVD novels as a potential source of inspiration.

The Vampire Diaries has featured man relationships that fans adore, whether or not they last or if they’re as heartbreaking now after over a decade.
“100%. Yeah, I have a story I still want to tell,” Plec said. “I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. So, we’ll see.”
“I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell.”
The pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries drew the largest audience for any series premiere on The CW since the network’s inception in 2006. Set in the fictional small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, the series is centered around the love triangle between the protagonist Elena Gilbert, portrayed by Nina Dobrev and vampire brothers Stefan Salvatore, played by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder’s Damon Salvatore. The series has received numerous award nominations, including numerous Teen Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Saturn Awards.

The Vampire Diaries has many unique species, like witches. But from Bonnie to Kai who are the strongest witches in the series?

The Vampire Diaries universe faced a significant setback in 2022 when The CW canceled Legacies, the second spinoff. This cancelation followed the network’s acquisition by Nexstar, which led to a shift away from dramas aimed at younger audiences. Despite this, Plec remains optimistic about the franchise’s future, revealing that there had been plans for another spinoff before Legacies was canceled.
Will the Vampire Diaries Franchise Be Revived?
Plec’s comments suggest that any new series would need to align with the established continuity of the television universe while possibly exploring elements from the books not yet seen on screen. The novels feature a broader range of supernatural beings, including kitsunes, psychics, and witches, alongside the familiar vampires and werewolves. A potential new series could delve into these unexplored aspects, bringing fresh intrigue to the enduring Vampire Diaries saga.
