Melissa Benoist is probably best known for bringing Supergirl to life during the show’s six-season run. However, the actor credits her time as Marley Rose on the musical comedy-drama Glee with preparing her for the superhero role.
“What I learned on Glee was that I was a really hard worker and that I could do really hard things because the schedule on that show was grueling because there were so many moving parts,” Benoist told Collider. “It was fun but tough. I’m sure if you’ve had anyone else from the show on here, they’ve said the same thing. You had to rehearse the dances, you had to prerecord the songs, then you had to film the songs, and filming the songs were a lot longer. They took hours and hours and hours. And then you also had the scene work. I knew that Supergirl was going to carry a lot of pressure, and the responsibilities were going to be immense, and I think my experience only gave me the belief that I had the ability to carry Supergirl.”

Peacemaker creator and DC Studios co-head James Gunn shares a look at an Eagly gift he was given.
Benoist made her debut as Kara Danvers/Supergirl when the series premiered on ABC in Oct. 2015 before moving to The CW Network. Born Kara Zor-El, she was sent to Earth from Krypton to protect her baby cousin Kal-El, but her spacecraft got knocked off course and was stuck in the Phantom Zone for 24 years. By the time she arrived on Earth, Kal-El had already grown up and become Superman. The series starts 12 years later, as Kara begins to embrace her superhuman powers and decides to protect the citizens of National City as Supergirl.
DC Has A New Live-Action Supergirl
Now that her tenure as the DC character has ended, Benoist offered some advice to Milly Alcock, who will portray Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the DC Universe. “I think what always drove me while working on that show was the audience and who I knew I was making the show for,” the actor said, explaining her personal approach to the role. “Of course, I know that she is an iconic character that spans many generations of fans, but the people that I was making that show for while we were making it were young women, and if I kept that in the forefront of my mind, it always made everything palatable.”

DCU boss James Gunn first announced his intention to develop a new Supergirl movie in Jan. 2023. Directed by Craig Gillespie from a script written by Ana Nogueira, the film is titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The story is said to follow “Supergirl away from Earth as she travels through the cosmos with her trusty canine, Krypto the Superdog, to escape a life stuck perpetually under the shadow of her cousin, Superman. She encounters an alien girl named Ruthye, who is bent on revenge for the death of her father, and recruits Supergirl to help her.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
