Despicable Me is a successful franchise and the new entry didn’t disappoint. Despicable Me 4 is set to steal the No. 1 spot at the box office, bringing it strong numbers for the Fourth of July weekend.
Per Variety, Despicable Me 4 is projected to earn $120 million over its five-day opening weekend. The multi-billion franchise is just premiering the sixth installment of the series, and its new triumph won’t have the Minions steal the moon, but help Despicable Me 4 steal the No. 1 spot in the charts. However, as exciting as its debut numbers are, they are still behind the previous entry, 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, as Despicable Me 4 only made $72.4 million over the first three days, compared to The Rise of Gru‘s $107 million opening.

The Mega Minions were a natural next step for Gru’s henchmen in terms of comedy.
Despicable Me 4‘s numbers bring it to the lowest opening since 2017 when Despicable Me 3 earned $72.4 million over its opening weekend. Overall, Despicable Me 4 scored the fourth opening weekend after 2015’s Minions, with $115.7 million, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and 2013’s Despicable Me 2, with $83.5 million.
That is not to say the animated film isn’t going to be a success. So far, the Despicable Me movies have grossed billions, as every sequel to the 2010 original film grossed over $900 million. Given the current interest in animated films, as Inside Out 2 recently crossed the $1 billion mark, Despicable Me 4 has the potential to become the third-ranking film in the franchise. Although it failed to impress the critics, as the new entry holds the lowest rating so far, with a “rotten” score of 53% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the animated film received 90% from the audience, which means Despicable Me 4 will continue to draw people into theaters.

With Despicable Me 4 in theaters, fans are wondering if there will be extra scenes once the credits roll to tease the franchise being expanded.

Despicable Me 4 Director Teased the Franchise’s Future
Despicable Me already features six movies in the franchise, but it could go on forever. With Steve Carell voicing Gru, and a team of lovable banana-loving minions, the franchise is far from over. The film’s director, Chris Renaud, also added to that, noting that the sequels could continue to include time jumps.
“We have so many characters at this point in this world that, again, decisions have to be made,” Renaud explained about Despicable Me‘s future. “So aging them up in this particular film, then it becomes even more of an unanswered question as to what’s going on in their lives. But I don’t think that precludes us from doing something where we set a movie 20 years in the future and say, oh my gosh, Gru Jr. and Edith have now inherited dad’s villain business, or whatever. I think we can go anywhere we want.”
Despicable Me 4 is now showing in theaters.
