“10 Reasons Andrew Garfield Is Perfect to Be the Next MCU Spider-Man After Avengers: Secret Wars”

Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Marvel’s Spider-Man has always been one of the comics’ most popular superheroes, and he’s arguably had more cinematic opportunities than any of their characters. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was way ahead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s inception, and even then, there was a whole other franchise reboot before Tom Holland shows up in the MCU as Peter Parker. Audiences got their first taste of Andrew Garfield’s take on the iconic webslinger in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and his interpretation of the character made a satisfying return alongside Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The MCU’s upcoming film slate has proudly advertised Avengers: Secret Wars as the follow-up to Avengers 5, which will undoubtedly shatter the superhero paradigm when it hits theaters on May 7, 2027.

There are already rumors that Avengers: Secret Wars will be a multiverse story like never before, where variants of the same characters battle to save their respective universe. Avengers: Secret Wars, at the least, should reunite Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield’s different Spider-Men. However, only one may be left standing when the multiverse dust settles. There’s a strong case to be made for why Andrew Garfield deserves this honor and should be the MCU’s primary Spider-Man post-Secret Wars.

He’s the Strongest Actor of the Trio

The MCU prides itself in the talent that it’s able to assemble for its larger-than-life superheroes and villains, many of whom are actually Academy Award winners and highly respected in their fields. Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire are captivating performers, but Andrew Garfield’s craft is on a whole other level. Garfield’s filmography is the most diverse of the three Spider-Man actors. However, he’s also received the greatest critical accolades and is the only one of the group to have any Academy Award nominations.

Garfield received Best Actor Oscar noms for his work in both Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick… Boom!, yet his theater work has also gotten a lot of positive attention, and he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Angels in America. Awards are, of course, subjective and not the ultimate mark of an actor’s worth. However, in Garfield’s case, they’re a testament to his skills.

Marvel Movies Before The MCU Split Image, Featuring Blade, Spider-Man and Ghost Rider

Before the MCU formally kicked off, several other Marvel films explored the giant’s rich comic history.

All of the Spider-Man movies have their highs and lows. That being said, Maguire and Holland’s movies are the most consistent and accumulate into impressive products by the end of their trilogies. There’s a proper sense of symmetry and closure that’s present in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy as well as Holland’s MCU efforts. Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a bad reputation for rampant studio interference that’s more concerned about setting up the franchise’s future than delivering a good film.

Accordingly, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was canceled, and Garfield’s Spider-Man is the only one of the bunch not to have a complete trilogy that completes his character’s arc. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 set up a lot of characters and ideas that ultimately don’t go anywhere because there’s no sequel to pay them off. Garfield’s return as the MCU’s primary Spider-Man means that there could finally be closure to his movies.

Garfield’s Spider-Man Has the Most Trauma to Explore

Garfield’s Peter suffered more than any other Spider-Man.

None of the cinematic Spider-Men have it easy. Each of them has to make their own respective sacrifices as well as watch their family and friends suffer losses. However, Garfield’s Spider-Man easily has the most trauma out of the three, which even becomes a veritable plot point for his character in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield’s Spider-Man experiences the expected loss of his Uncle Ben, but he’s also a special case where he’s essentially responsible for his villains’ creation.

This puts an extra level of responsibility and guilt on Garfield’s Spider-Man that would be satisfying to further develop in new movies. His character’s most tragic loss is Gwen Stacy, whose death does justice to the famous comic book storyline. Garfield’s Spider-Man gets some cathartic closure when he’s able to save MJ from the same fate in No Way Home. This scene is one of the movie’s most powerful moments and speaks to Garfield’s ability to carry the weight that’s necessary for a compelling superhero.

Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suit is the only one to feature his classic big eyes.

There’s a real art when it comes to bringing comic book costumes to life. Movies can embrace comic accuracy with their cinematic suits or opt for revised designs that reflect more modern sensibilities. None of the Spider-Man costumes from the many movies are bad, yet there’s consensus that the detailed design and approach that’s present in The Amazing Spider-Man movies is the best Spider-Man suit to hit the screen. A superhero is far more than a costume. However, MCU fans have expressed wishes that Holland’s Spider-Man attire was closer to Garfield’s garb.

Garfield’s return to the MCU, if nothing else, means a comeback of this celebrated suit. Additionally, the MCU has really gone overboard when it comes to Spider-Man’s evolving suits, many of which incorporate Iron Man tech into the equation. Garfield’s MCU presence wouldn’t need to mess with Spider-Man’s look, but it’s also exciting to know that his costume could receive substantial upgrades that reflect the MCU’s deeply developed superhero world.

Garfield’s Spider-Man Has the Best One-Liners With MCU Energy

Only Tom Holland’s Peter Parker could challenge Garfield’s level of quips.

Spider-Man is a multi-faceted character who’s defined by many different character traits. One of the superhero’s core tenets is that he’s prone to snappy one-liners that mock his opponents and add levity to his battles. Maguire and Holland’s Spider-Men both crack the occasional joke, but it often feels unnatural, especially with Maguire’s character. Alternatively, Garfield rises to the challenge and truly captures Spider-Man’s playful energy when he insults criminals and villains.

A lot of the first Amazing Spider-Man’s joy comes from Garfield’s ability to make fun of street-level thugs. The Marvel Cinematic Universe occasionally receives criticism over how it can be too “quippy” or that not everyone is well-suited for this type of dialogue. Garfield doesn’t just make this dynamic work, but his performance is also the perfect fit for the MCU. No Way Home further proves this, as Garfield naturally delivers MCU-stylized dialogue, while it feels awkward from Maguire.

Garfield Brings a Lot to the Table as Peter Parker

Garfield’s growth as Peter saw him transition from a cocky teen to an older hero unsure of his strengths.

A split image of Scarlet Witch in Multiverse of Madness, Peter and MJ in No Way Home, and Kang in Quantumania

From No Way Home and Multiverse of Madness to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, the MCU’s Multiverse Saga varies in Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

There’s an essential duality to Spider-Man’s character between his grandiose superhero persona and the more isolated and awkward teenager, Peter Parker. Fans tend to debate that Tobey Maguire gives the strongest Spider-Man performance, while Garfield best understands Peter Parker’s character. The human side of the equation is crucial to the character, and Garfield has so much fun in his two movies whenever he subtly uses his superpowers in his civilian state to mess with those around him.

Surprisingly, some of the strongest moments in The Amazing Spider-Man movies are when Garfield’s Spider-Man isn’t in his suit but instead manipulates bullies on the basketball court or tricks Oscorp employees. It’s exciting to consider that Garfield’s permanent return to the MCU could bring forward an excellent Peter Parker in addition to his alter ego.

Garfield’s Spider-Man Holds the Most Potential For Romantic Storylines

The Amazing Spider-Man movies showed that Peter deserves his happy ending.

Sam Raimi and the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogies both bank on Mary Jane Watson’s popularity and rely on her as Peter Parker’s love interest. The Amazing Spider-Man opts for a more comic-accurate interpretation of Spider-Man’s story that begins with his tragic relationship with Gwen Stacy before the character eventually meets MJ. Shailene Woodley actually shot scenes as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but they were ultimately cut from the final product.

Garfield’s Spider-Man has exceptional chemistry with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. However, Garfield’s character deserves to meet his own MJ and find true love. Garfield’s MCU return means that the character could finally get this opportunity and find the romantic fulfillment that he deserves. Alternatively, Secret Wars’ multiverse shenanigans could also mean that Garfield’s Spider-Man finds happiness with a Gwen Stacy variant, perhaps even from the Spider-Verse films.

The TASM universe set up a large collection of classic villains being set up.

Although Spider-Man: No Way Home was rife with interdimensional villains, there was still room for one or two more.

There are certain Spider-Man villains that are essential to Peter Parker’s story, which means that they’ve received multiple cinematic interpretations over the years. Garfield’s two Spider-Man movies cover a surprising amount of ground with their antagonists, which include the Lizard, Green Goblin, Electro, and Rhino. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 features a forced sequence that teases the induction of the Sinister Six, and Sony even had plans to release a spin-off movie focused on the villain team in addition to The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

The Sinister Six has yet to appear in any of the cinematic Spider-Man adaptations, but it’s a development that feels inevitable. Garfield’s Spider-Man puts in the work and lays the foundation for this momentous showdown, and it deserves to get the proper payoff. Garfield’s presence as the MCU’s Spider-Man could finally put the webslinger up against the Sinister Six, whether it’s made up of characters that are purely from The Amazing Spider-Man movies or an amalgamation of all three cinematic universes.

Garfield Does the Best Job With Peter’s Science Skills

Peter Parker tinkers with science in The Amazing Spider-Man.

While they’re all intelligent, it was science that aided Garfield’s Spider-Man in beating his enemies.

It’s easy to get lost in Spider-Man’s genuine superpowers and forget that the character is also a brilliant scientist and problem-solver on top of everything else. This aspect of the character isn’t wholly absent in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, but it’s much better established in The Amazing Spider-Man. There are many moments in Garfield’s movies where his scientific and technical acumen are the key to success rather than heightened spider abilities.

This dynamic even carries over into Spider-Man: No Way Home when Garfield’s Peter Parker handles the science when it comes to this trio of Spider-Men. The MCU’s Spider-Man has grown too reliant on Stark Industries and Avengers’ resources. Garfield’s Spider-Man could revitalize this lapsed character trait and remind audiences that this superhero is as smart as he is strong.

There’s the Potential of Street-Level Superhero Team-Ups

The TASM universe was meant to be set in the MCU with Oscorp Tower appearing in The Avengers.

Spider-Man is more than capable of handling crime on his own. However, one of comics’ greatest joys is seeing heroes work together and take on common threats, especially when so many crime-fighters live in the same city. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man even makes his debut in Captain America: Civil War, where he’s a crucial aid to the MCU’s existing heroes. His own films also lean into this concept, and Homecoming is very much a team effort between Spider-Man and Iron Man, while No Way Home pairs Peter Parker together with Doctor Strange.

Garfield’s Spider-Man is forced to be on his own, but his proper incorporation into the MCU would quickly solve this problem. It would be extremely satisfying to see how Garfield’s Spider-Man works alongside other New York heroes, whether it’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or Ms. Marvel.
