There is a bizarre Harry Potter theory that fans are still debating years after the books and films came out.
Fan theories are a big part of the Harry Potter universe and while some – like the idea that George Weasley is really Willy Wonka – are extremely farfetched, they are still fun to discuss.
One in particular, is that Harry was making everything up all along. In the very first book – the Philosopher’s Stone – we quickly learn that Harry’s bedroom is a cupboard under the stairs at the Dursley’s house.
And in a fan thread on Quora, one Potter fanatic has suggested Harry never left his makeshift bedroom
They wrote: “The most bizarre I can think of, and my personal favourite, is that Harry never actually left the cupboard under the stairs, and actually created the Wizarding World as an escape from the trauma of his abusive childhood.
“Hogwarts wasn’t real, but something that his mind created to deal with the pain he was in. There are also similar theories about him being in a coma, in which all the characters are either made up or fellow coma patients around him.”
It’s the classic ‘and it was all a dream’ scenario, a common story ending that many argue is an easy way to get out of a story.
In this case, this theory is just a theory as J.K. Rowling never confirmed it herself, but fans still discuss it to this day. In the comments, one said it’s the most depressing theory they’ve read.
The fan added: “I can’t imagine all that to be just an imagination. It’s utterly sad.”
While someone else disagreed and said: “You can tell that Harry really went to Hogwarts (and it was not a dream) because of all the things that happened to his adopted family, and their house, and how mature Harry became toward the end there.”
