An Elden Ring player discovers creepy weeping angel statues caused by a texture glitch.
A texture bug in the Shaded Castle creates the illusion of moving statue heads, adding a horror element that intrigues horror enthusiasts.
A spooked Elden Ring player has shared their experience with what appears to be weeping angel statues animated by a texture bug. Even though it was released two years ago, FromSoftware’s game is the gift that keeps giving when it comes to hidden details constantly being discovered by the Elden Ring community.
The Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin dark fantasy RPG also became a summer challenge for gamers, thanks to the release of its DLC. Expanded lore, more punishing boss battles, and even a bug that saw Shadow of the Erdtree players gifted 250k runes populated the hit expansion and dazzled thrill-seekers.
Though the idea of an Elden Ring movie remains hypothetical, that theoretical concept would be better served by the small screen.
Posted on Reddit by Valerica-D4C, a 12-second clip shows the player’s protagonist wearing a Marais Mask while exploring the Shaded Castle within the base game. Moving along a grassy corridor in the ruins, the player guides their character back and forth to show a texture glitch taking effect on the stone statues behind. The phenomenon left the player shaken, commenting “Sure gave me a scare” on the post, as the bug gave the illusion that the statues’ heads were moving, with others saying they resembled weeping angels.
Elden Ring Texture Glitch Spawns Creepy Weeping Angels
Said to be a texture-loading issue, members of the Elden Ring subreddit weighed in on what they thought was causing the glitch. One eagle-eyed contributor took a closer look and concluded the weeping angels were a result of textures despawning, meaning you see the lower resolution version the farther away you get. Another member dived deeper, claiming the glitch switched to a lower polygon model to assist with performance. Players currently have the option to take graphics into their own hands through an Elden Ring mod offering 4500 HD textures to improve the game’s quality, which may be a suitable fix for the statue bug.
The Shaded Castle is located in the Northern part of the Altus Plateau. The stone ruins naturally give off an eerie vibe, enhanced by an aggressive Great Enemy Boss dwelling at the top of the castle. Elemer of the Briar’s savage ranged attacks increases his difficulty tenfold with magic-infused blades that make them glow red. Furthermore, the boss’ brutal blood hunt for bell bearings paints him as a slasher villain belonging in a horror movie.
Additionally, this rogue texture bug got the attention of horror enthusiasts within the Soulslike community, but this isn’t the first time FromSoftware’s game has been linked to the genre. A previous Elden Ring clip demonstrates its horror game qualities and several players agreed weeping angels was another terrifying addition. The Abyssal Woods from the DLC were also mentioned in the subreddit’s comments because fans think this location showcases the developer’s potential to make a chilling survival horror title.
