If you’re wanting to watch a new franchise that isn’t Harry Potter, then here are some great choices full of nostalgia
Watching something from your childhood, or even something that bring back memories, is always fun, and we might often find ourselves watching films and TV shows from years ago as they bring us an element of comfort.
There’s a lot going on in the world and so we will probably take solace watching something where we know the ending – even if it is sad. Harry Potter is a franchise that people often return to. For years, the films have hit our TV screens over Christmas, giving us a festive throwback.
But if you’ve re-watched the films over and over, and you fancy yourself something different then there are many other franchises to choose from.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t watch Harry Potter ever again, but it’s always good to have a little bit of a break. If you’re a fan of franchises, then take a trip down memory lane with these popular movies:
Jurassic Park
There are six Jurassic Park films to feast your eyes on.
All six have a link but some may argue that there’s the first three and then there’s the second three.
The first one came out in 1993 and follows a group of scientists who get invited to John Hammond’s theme park full of cloned dinosaurs. The Hollywood line up included Sam O’Niell, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough.

From then on, chaos is unleashed and the team find themselves battling the world’s scariest monsters. Despite being from the 90s, the special effects are excellent and arguably scary, in fact.
The second and third films were released in 1997 and 2001 respectively, but it wasn’t until 2015 when the fourth one came out.
The final three star Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard and follows as a new dinosaur theme park opens up.
At the time of writing, only the final two films are on Netflix while the first and fourth ones are on Amazon Prime.
The Lord of the Rings

There aren’t many people who have seen J.R.R Tolkien’s famous trilogy.
The films are set in the world of Middle-earth and follow the hobbit Frodo Baggins as he and the Fellowship embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring to ensure the destruction of its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.
If you like yourself a bit of a challenge, then you might want to do a Lord of The Rings marathon.
To watch all three you’ll need 11 hours and 22 minutes so it can definitely be done in a day.
The films are on Now TV.
Pirates of the Caribbean

Setting sail to sea now and another franchise popular among movie fans is Pirates of the Caribbean.
Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly, the movies follow the three as they chase down ‘bad guys’ and, at times, each other.
Altogether there are five movies though only the first three feature all three stars.
The first one came out in 2003 with the most recent being released in 2017. There is apparently a sixth film in the works which will star Johnny Depp.
At the time of writing, all films were on Disney+.
Star Wars

There’s always a big debate about whether to watch these in chronological order, or in order of the years that they were set. If you only have watched them in one way as of now, maybe try it out another way.
There are currently 12 canonical Star Wars movies but these include the nine core “episodes” that make up the original, prequel, and sequel trilogies, collectively known as The Skywalker Saga.
It also covers both live-action Star Wars Story spinoffs and the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated flick.
The first one came out in 1977 and the most recent was released in 2019.
It’s fun to watch how CGI has developed over the years, though I think the earlier ones are some of the best.
They’re all on Disney+.
Indiana Jones
In 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark came out.
Harrison Ford played the iconic Indiana Jones – an archaeologist who goes on the hunt for missing Lost Ark of the Covenant. The films follow Jones as he goes on epic journeys of adventure.
The latest film came out last year, which Harrison Ford also starred in.
In terms of whether they’re connected, the series is basically all in chronological order with the exception of Temple of Doom serving as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The Last Crusade opens with a flashback sequence—featuring the late River Phoenix as young Indy—but the rest of the movie is pure sequel.
You can watch the films on Disney+.
Shrek

If you grew up with Harry Potter, then Shrek was probably another big favourite of yours as a child.
It’s the perfect fairytale-yet-not-a-fairytale and the first film follows Shrek as he rescues Princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a dragon.
But the second film – Shrek 2 – is probably one where fans argue that the sequel is better than the first movie. Shrek 2 is full of music and laughs, with a stellar cast.
There are four films in total, but a fifth film has also been confirmed.
You can currently watch Shrek on Now TV.
The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is a series of dystopian films based on the novels by Suzanne Collins.
They star Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth as well as Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci and Woody Harrelson.
They follow Jennifer’s character who volunteers to play in an annual tournament that ends with only one player alive. From there, the movies follow what comes next.
You can watch them on Amazon Prime.
The Bourne Series
The Bourne franchise stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne – a man who finds himself suddenly with no memory but all the skills needed to be an assassin. It then follows him on a quest to find his identity while also trying to escape people attempting to track him down.
There are five films in total, with the first one coming out in 2002 and the most recent in 2016. They all feature Matt Damon and follow his character on various adventures and plot twists.
You can catch some of then on Now TV and also Amazon Prime.
Of course, these are just some of the franchises out there.
There’s also Twilight, Back to the Future, Avatar and then you have the Marvel Series. The list is endless
But if you’ve re-watched the films over and over, and you fancy yourself something different then there are many other franchises to choose from.
