My husband is 25 years older and we were engaged after 2 weeks of dating – But what happened next made me regret it

A 30-year-old woman, who looks young for her age, admits her much older husband is often mistaken for her father.

When Kayy Mackenzie, 30, met decorator Davey Mackenzie, 54, in a pub in 2019, the pair instantly clicked, despite their 25-year age gap.

After just two weeks of dating, Kayy and Davey got engaged, and in December 2021 they tied the knot.

But Kayy, a musical theatre performer, from Epsom, Surrey, is often mistaken for her husband’s daughter when they’re out on dates.

She explained: ‘Restaurant staff see us together and comment on how nice it is to see a dad and daughter out for dinner.

‘They always look so embarrassed when I tell them we’re married.’

The couple first got chatting in the pub when they discovered they had similar ‘down to earth’ attitudes and enjoyed sharing a pint of beer and a dance.

Kayy added: ‘When we first met, he said he noticed me as soon as I walked in the door and thought “That’s the woman I’m going to marry”.

‘We got talking later when I noticed him on the dance floor, he was so nice, and seemed really cool and younger than he is.’

Kayy first moved in with Davey just two weeks after they met in 2019.

When the UK imposed a lockdown in a bid to control the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, Kayy ended up staying with Davey.

While spending the pandemic together so early in their relationship was ‘a learning curve’ for both partners, the couple quickly ‘bonded’ and it soon became clear to Kayy that Davey was the one.

When Davey surprised Kayy by getting down on one knee during a day trip to London, she didn’t hesitate to say ‘yes’.

While Davey has three children from his previous marriage who are all in their early twenties, his family have accepted his relationship with Kayy and they all get on

Kayy said: ‘I knew he was my soulmate so I didn’t see the point in waiting.’

Kayy added: ‘His family took a while to come around to the idea of the relationship because of the age gap.

‘But there are no issues now – when we see each other we all get on.’

Kayy explained how despite being a generation apart, she and Davey complement each other and learn from one another.

She said: ‘He brings a lot of wisdom from a lot of life experience and I teach him modern things like how to use his phone properly.

‘He’s made me more grounded as a person.

‘When I’m upset, instead of just going silent or getting annoyed he’s taught me to talk it out with him.’

They have plans to move ‘somewhere coastal, by the beach’ soon and would like to have children in the future.

While Kayy thought Davey was younger than he was when they first met –  and he thought she was older – the age gap never bothered them.

Kayy explained: ‘I was surprised at first when he said he was nearly 50 but I didn’t give a toss at all.

‘I’ve never considered age at all in relationships, I’ve always wanted a guy who is older than me so they can look after me.

‘Funnily enough he thought I was older than I am and I thought he was younger! But age doesn’t matter to us, it’s just a number.’

She added: ‘Davey just had this lovely way about him where he was very loving caring, and accepting from the start, and that’s what mattered.’

Davey said: ‘I was first drawn to Kayy when I saw her walk into the room, she looked so beautiful and loving.

‘Something about her just made me go “Wow, she’s the one”.

‘We don’t notice the age gap. Love is love, not numbers. We have a very similar attitude really, she’s mature.

‘I was slightly embarrassed at first to be mistaken as a father sometimes, but I don’t care too much now, I find it quite amusing.

‘We are very affectionate and really understand each other like no one else ever has.

‘We are always laughing and joking and always there for each other no matter what.

‘People have tried to attack our relationship in the past yet we’ve always remained unbreakable.

‘We’re very strong and extremely happy.’
