After potentially expecting a compliment on what she was wearing, she was shocked to receive a request to leave instead: “’That doesn’t matter,” said the doorman. “Fur is not allowed here. You need to leave’. After thinking he was joking, she asked him ‘Really?’ to which he replied: ‘Yes, please go’.
Alexandra went on to say she felt it was morally justified to wear real fur, as long as it was vintage: “I know some people don’t agree with that, but personally, it’s never bothered me. I would never buy a fur coat new.”
She also admitted the situation made her feel like bursting into tears on the spot: “It was such an intense moment. I almost wanted to cry, because it just felt like such a weird rejection and then I was questioning my morals.”
One commenter told how they had bought a fur coat from a charity shop only to get shamed by someone working there, while another said: “Everyone wears Canada Goose in the city though with no issue. Sigh.”
One joked: “I love this style of activism. Solves nothing, creates zero change, actively loses them money, allows them to feel superior over something pointless”. However some commenters thought she had over-reacted, with one saying: “It’s extremely common for bars, clubs, and speakeasies in NYC to have a dress code” and another saying they thought: “It’s really not that weird of a rejection.”
