One lucky Elden Ring player has managed to defeat Messmer the Impaler after accidentally discovering that the notorious boss can kill himself. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree brings forth a challenging new chapter to the hit FromSoftware title, but this player stumbled into some good fortune with one of the DLC’s hardest boss battles.

Two years after the base game launched to great success, Shadow of the Erdtree sets out to expand upon Elden Ring. FromSoftware games are known for having quite difficult combat, and Shadow of the Erdtree definitely continues this tradition. When it comes to boss fights, Messmer is a force to be reckoned with in the DLC, thanks to his agility and his two harrowing fight phases.

After several attempts, the popular player known as Let Me Solo Her finally manages to defeat Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree’s final boss.

However, a player known on Reddit as X1Reaper1X recently got an accidental victory against Messmer after discovering that the boss is able to fall off the map, which, of course, kills him. Facing Messmer is difficult, but this clip showcases a hilariously anticlimactic boss fight. This player was holding down the fight with Messmer in his snake form quite well, when all of a sudden, the boss was pushed past the barricade. From there, gravity does the rest of the work, leaving X1Reaper1X with an unexpected win.

Shadow of the Erdtree Bug Pushes Messmer Off the Map

Reactions to this player’s clip on Reddit have been met with comments from others claiming they ran into the same issue. Some players lamented that the anticlimactic nature of the bug left them disappointed, while others have considered it a win no matter what. Shadow of the Erdtree‘s boss encounters have brought forth some hilarious moments, and winning against Messmer in such an absurd way is definitely a fun addition to the list. The clip showcases an incredibly difficult fight, only for it to abruptly end in one of the least rewarding ways possible.

Due to the intense nature of the boss, it’s easy to understand how an accidental win like this could be seen as a relief. However, it could also be frustrating to players who really want the satisfaction of killing Messmer the way Shadow of the Erdtree intended. Despite being newly released, some Shadow of the Erdtree players are already pulling off some impressive feats. Unfortunately for X1Reaper1X, it appears that gravity is mostly to thank for their win. This specific bug will hopefully be fixed sometime in the near future, but until then, it appears that Messmer has a secret weakness.
