The celebrity crimper behind Amy Winehouse’s trademark beehive has admitted he only did it for a laugh.

But the look stuck when she stepped out of her trailer to film the video to hit Back to Black and the crew loved it.

Speaking ahead of the 10-year anniversry of her death on July 23, hairdresser Alex Foden told the People: “As a joke, I backcombed her hair massively and put an extra packet of hair in.

“I said, ‘There you go, let’s go and show the finished look’, taking the p*** obviously, and as we came out the trailer everybody went, ‘Oh my God! That is it, that is the signature look’.

“It was never meant to be that big so I said, let’s turn you into a caricature. I’d get two packs of synthetic hair, which is light, put hair nets around it and sew those together. We called them fur balls.”

Alex, who knew Amy for five years, also recounted how the hair was like a black hole. He said: “She once couldn’t find her mobile for three days.

“She scratched her head and it was inside her beehive.”

As Amy’s decline into addiction worsened she became known for her dishevelled look.

But Alex said she took great pride in her appearance and never left the house without putting on make-up.

And she also loved her chocolate-scented bubble baths.

Alex said: “Self-care was massive for her.

“She loved her facemasks and she never left the house without her eyeliner on. She’d bathe for hours and I would smell chocolate truffle all the way through the house all day; she would smell lovely.”

He added of the first time they hung out: “She turned up with Haribo, Jack Daniel’s, vodka and meatballs she had made. She was just a normal girl. She was a good listener and always wanted to know everything about your life.

“She wanted to make people happy. It was such a shame she couldn’t put her own theory into practice because she could solve anyone’s problems.”

Alex said Amy proved her kindness when the pair were gifted a Supermarket Sweep-style shopping trip to London department store Harvey Nichols and they took £30,000-worth of freebies.
