We’ve all heard of the Chevrolet El Camino, the gutted Chevelle-esque pickup that remains a cult classic to this day. The body style lives on in Australia where the Holden Ute, based on a Commodore, and still keeps us jealous nothing like that is offered here today.

But what about Cadillac? Cadillac surely never made a pickup truck, right? Wrong.

Enter the 1976 Cadillac Mirage. A 1976 Cadillac Coupe Deville with a usable truck bed, and downright sinister style. Luckily, Drive stumbled across the 1976 Mirage and decided to take a closer look at how this car came about.

Cadillac commissioned only 204 of these 4,500-pound luxury utes, custom made by Gene Winfield. Winfield cut them, stretched them, and then slapped a pickup bed in the rear, and there you have it: a Cadillac Mirage. Winfield even included a separate door for your golf clubs. We can’t get over how utterly 1970s classy that is.

Power came from a mammoth 8.2-liter V8. Torque? 400 lb-ft. Nice. Horsepower? 200. Not so nice.

But with that amount of torque ready and willing, the 1976 Mirage will get up and scoot its way still, as we can see in the accompanying video. Really, you should see what this car is all about.
