Season 2 will be scarier than season 1, with Wednesday herself used as a ” jump scare ,” but it will still be suitable for younger audiences.
By focusing less on romance and more on horror, Wednesday season 2 can lean into what makes the character so unique without falling into familiar teen drama territory.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega teases season 2’s new horror elements. Based on the iconic Addams Family character, Wednesday premiered on Netflix in 2022, following Ortega’s titular character as she attends Nevermore Academy and unravels a sinister mystery. The show was a massive success for the streamer, and season 2 is now confirmed to be on the way. Ortega, who now serves as an executive producer on the show, has already teased that some changes are in store for Wednesday season 2, including a slightly scarier tone.
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Ortega reveals more about what audiences can expect from Wednesday season 2, specifically touching on the increase in horror. While the actor assures fans that it will still be suitable for younger audiences, she does tease that Wednesday herself becomes a scarier figure. According to Ortega, 1964’s The Masque of the Red Death, an Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, was a big inspiration. Check out her comment below:
“I think the feel that we’re going for is a little bit more horror-inspired. Not to say that suddenly we’re the goriest show of all time. I mean, there’s six-year-olds watching. We’re doing this thing now where Wednesday just kind of appears. She is a little bit of a jump scare herself.”
Wednesday Season 2’s Scarier Tone Is Good News For The Show
How Season 2 Of The Netflix Show Can Be An Improvement Over Season 1
Wednesday season 1’s reviews were generally positive, and the show, most importantly, was a big viewership hit for Netflix. Clearly, then, creator and showrunner Alfred Gough Miles Millar found a winning tone and story to tell that audiences enjoyed. Despite this, however, changing up the show’s tone could help Wednesday season 2 become even bigger and more successful.
Wednesday season 2 started filming in May 2024 in Ireland, with Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, and Thandiwe Newton joining returning stars Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mustafaa, and Georgie Farmer. No release date for season 2 has been set.
While the response to the show was positive, there were aspects of season 1 that felt fairly familiar, particularly when it came to the teen romance aspects of the story. Ortega herself has previously addressed Wednesday‘s romantic elements, saying during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last spring that moving away from romance will “let [Wednesday] be her own individual and fight her own crimes.” Instead of offering up a more traditional teen romance story, the show can lean into what makes its story and lead character unique.
Wednesday is evidently a peculiar character, and a more horror-oriented tone is befitting her general aura. Plus, the Wednesday season 1 ending sets up an even more sinister mystery in season 2, and altering the show’s tone could raise the stakes, ultimately making the whole season more gripping. While it doesn’t sound like Wednesday season 2 will be too scary, it certainly seems like audiences are in for a refreshing journey when the hit Netflix series returns.
