Naming a baby can be a daunting task but Harry Potter fans can get some inspiration from J.K. Rowling’s tactics – as used to name her characters in the magical series

Names like Luna, Hermione, and Harry have gained popularity among parents naming their newborns, while character names such as Professor Trelawney, Bartemius Crouch, and Slughorn are best left within the realm of Harry Potter.

According to the personalized gifts brand, like any accomplished witch or wizard, J. K. Rowling had several naming formats, which can be grouped into the following main types – offering an excellent starting point for expectant parents.

Here’s how the author did it:

Mythology.

Mythology can be an excellent starting point when trying to avoid common, popular names.

For instance, the name Hermione fits this category perfectly.

Hermione originates from the wife of Menelaus in Greek mythology.

But there are more Harry Potter names inspired by mythology.

These include Minerva McGonagall, named after the Roman goddess of wisdom, Remus Lupin, from the founder of Rome, and Percy – short for Percival – a renowned knight.

Stars and Constellations:

Another strategy for choosing your baby’s name is to use stars and constellations.

For instance, in the magical universe of Harry Potter, the name Sirius is also the moniker of the brightest star in our sky.

Similarly, Bellatrix is another star known for navigation, making it a fitting choice for a powerful female leader.

Draco (or Drake) is named after the draco constellation due to its dragon-like shape, all tracing back to the dark sky.

In J. K. Rowling’s enchanting series, several names are derived from elements of nature.

For instance, Harry’s mother is named Lily, a type of flower, while the name Cedric originates from the Latin word “cedrus,” or Cedar tree.

Additionally, there’s Lavender, which was the name of Ron Weasley’s eccentric girlfriend in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

According to Mr Patel of PersonalisedBee, who shares a surname with J. K. Rowling’s Indian witch twins: “The most important thing is to choose a name that you and your partner love.”

“But, if you draw inspiration from J.K. Rowling’s creative process, you can find a name that is both meaningful and memorable.”
