Eminem’s Secret 8 Mile Rap Battle Shocks Fans!

It was deleted from the film…

When Eminem comes to the UK, he tends to cause headlines. With his new album soaring to No. 1 the Detroit rapper flew to Britain, taking part in a whirlwind promo run.

As part of this, Eminem performed at Flippers – the cult Roller Disco in West London – making a surprise appearance alongside Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, with the show itself being curated by Gin & Juice.

It puts CLASH in mind of a few classic Eminem stories, such as his ‘hidden’ rap battle from multi award-winning film 8 Mile.

A semi-fictionalised account of his come-up, Eminem played B-Rabbit, a working class kid with a passion for rap music.

The film culminates in a rap battle between Eminem and Papa Doc, played by Anthony Mackie; dozens of Detroit rappers were hired for the event, starring as extras. To heat up the occasion, the extras held a rap battle, with the winner able to appear alongside Eminem in a small montage sequence.

Marv Won came out on top, and was scheduled to appear alongside Eminem – the famed rapper was meant to keep quiet, however, in order to protect his voice.

Unable to resist, Marv Won threw some bars in Eminem’s direction – and the superstar threw some back. Going toe-to-toe right there in the studio, it became an electrifying moment for the crowd present.

Eminem told Entertainment Weekly: “I was told that the mics were going to be off when we were doing the montage scenes of Rabbit coming up through the ranks and we were supposed to pantomime. For some reason, some of the others’ mics were on and they started going at me in front of the crowd”.

Marv Won told MTV, “After I spit my verse, the crowd was loving me. So, the competitor in him just couldn’t let that go. I wish he wasn’t as petty and I wish he was a bigger man and let me have my damn moment, but he didn’t”.

Eminem came out on top, winning the respect of the crowd – the scene was cut out of the film, but it’s inclusion on the DVD as a bonus feature effectively launched Marv Won into the mainstream.

He recalled: “It was really huge for me because that was one of the main scenes they sold the DVD on…That was the footage they sent to ‘Entertainment Tonight,’ ‘Extra’ and ‘Access Hollywood.’ It really helped my visibility”.
