SUMMARY
Elizabeth Olsen is heading back to the big screen in 2023 with a non-MCU movie, “His Three Daughters,” which will premiere at TIFF23.
“His Three Daughters” allows Olsen to showcase her acting skills alongside Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne, and serves as a worthy addition to her catalog of films. A break from Marvel is the best choice for her right now.
Elizabeth Olsen, best known for starring as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has primarily focused on acting roles in television in recent years. But the actress is heading back to the big screen in 2023 (and not for Marvel). Olsen is set to star in His Three Daughters, which will premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF23) in September. The actress’ previous three films were all set in the MCU — Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) — so His Three Daughters is a change of pace for Olsen.
Aside from her involvement in the MCU, Olsen hasn’t had a movie role since 2017, as she has mostly been involved in television projects. In addition to the critically-acclaimed and massive success WandaVision, the actress appeared in the Facebook Watch series Sorry For Your Loss and the HBO Max crime drama Love & Death. Now, she continues to focus on non-Marvel work with His Three Daughters.
His Three Daughters Is Elizabeth Olsen’s First Non-MCU Movie Since 2018 (& It Sounds Good)
Elizabeth Olsen plays one of the main characters in His Three Daughters alongside Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne. The upcoming film’s premise reads, “A tense, captivating, and touching portrait of family dynamics starring Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne as sisters who converge after their father’s health declines.” Aside from that information and the news that Azazel Jacobs is the director, not much is known about the movie. However, given the people involved in the project and its subject matter, the film is intriguing.
Olsen’s last non-Marvel movie was Kodachrome (2017), and His Three Daughters seems to be a worthy addition to the actress’ catalog. The premise allows Olsen to show off her impressive acting chops, and the film gives her the chance to act opposite two amazing performers. So when His Three Daughters premieres in September 2023, we will be seated.
Non-MCU Movies Are Better For Elizabeth Olsen Than A Scarlet Witch Return (For Now)
Although numerous MCU fans would love to see Elizabeth Olsen reprise her role as Wanda in a future Marvel movie or television series, it’s for the better that she is focusing on other projects. The Scarlet Witch seemingly died at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but many know she is one of the strongest beings in the universe and is likely still alive. It’s only a matter of time before the fan-favorite hero/villain returns to the MCU.
However, the Doctor Strange sequel was a significant disappointment regarding Wanda, so it makes more sense if Olsen steps away from Marvel for a bit while they reassess how to approach her character. In the meantime, the actress can work on other productions, like His Three Daughters, and continue to show the world how talented she is. Elizabeth Olsen will undoubtedly return as Wanda in the MCU, but a little break from Marvel is the best choice for her right now.
