‘Amy was in high spirits and at her happiest just weeks before her passing’, Amy Winehouse’s bandmate

The late musician died aged 27 in July 2011, sending the world into shock as they learnt the devastating news. At the time, Amy was said to be in high spirits and at her happiest. Just weeks before her passing, Amy had embarked on her 12-date European tour, kicking off in Belgrade.

But her tour was later cancelled so she could take “as long as it takes” to make herself comfortable again. Just days before her passing, Amy made her last appearance on stage at Camden’s Roundhouse on July 20, 2011, alongside her goddaughter Dionne Bromfield, whom she surprised to perform her single Mama Said alongside The Wanted.

Now, Dale Davis, who had worked with the six-time Grammy award winning singer since 2003, has shared what the pair spoke about just hours before she sadly died at her home in her beloved Camden, North London. In a new interview, Dale, who played bass for the songstress was in good spirits and was “never far from being OK”.

“I talked to her at 11.30pm, three hours before she went to bed for the last time, and she was on good form,” Dale told The Sun. He went on to add: “Amy said, ‘Dale, I’ve just been watching myself on YouTube and I can sing, can’t I?’ I replied, ‘Of course you can sing! You’re the best…’ You know. I’m glad she went to bed with that thought. She needed to appreciate she could sing because she was very humble. Even at her level, a person can never see it in themselves.

“They probably think, ‘Is the adulation real or not?” Over the course of Amy’s career, the late singer had her fair share of public struggles. The Me & Mr Jones hitmaker battled a drug addiction. But in her final years, Amy had become clean from drugs having spent time in rehab.

An inquest later found she died of alcohol poisoning, and heard testimony from a GP who had visited her at home the night before her final drink. Dr Christina Romete talked with Amy during her visit and told the court the singer admitted she was drinking again after a long period of abstinence.

She accepted the seriousness of her condition and chillingly told the doctor: “I don’t want to die”. Dr Romete revealed the star had been prescribed a medication called Librium to help her deal with alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Romete later described Amy was “one of the most intelligent young women I’ve ever met.”

During the inquest at St Pancras Coroner’s Court in London, assistant deputy coroner Suzanne Greenaway concluded that Amy had died from “accidental alcohol poisoning”. The official verdict was given as death through misadventure.
