The late musician, who passed away at her London home in July 2011, has received posthumous recognition for her music after being nominated for the February awards ceremony on Thursday.
Amy has been included in a category with Adele, Jess Glynne and Florence Welch thanks to the soundtrack that accompanied Asif Kapadia’s 2015 eponymous documentary about her life and career.
Posthumous: Amy Winehouse has been nominated for British Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards 2016, five years after her death
A new year: Adele, Jess Glynne and Florence Welch will also compete for the award in February 2016
The soundtrack, which included tracks like Stronger Than Me from her debut album Frank and Tears Dry On Their Own from Back To Black, was released in October 2015, three months after the eponymous film’s release.
Similarly, her old friend Adele made a comeback in October, and managed to eclipse her competitors in sales for the year within just three months.
The documentary centres around the last years of her life, until her untimely passing at the age of 27.
Amy sadly passed away in 2011 after an accidental overdose, following her highly-publicised battle with alcohol, drugs and bulimia.
The singer previously won the Best British Female Award back in 2007, in response to her charttopping 2006 album Back To Black.
That year, the musician triumphed against Lily Allen, Corinne Bailey Rae, Nerina Pallot and Jamelia to take the trophy.
In her acceptance speech, she said ‘I’m just glad my mum and dad are here to be honest’ as she pointed out Mitch and Janis in the audience.
It’s unclear whether the pair will be present at the 2016 awards ceremony as her father Mitch withdrew his support for the big screen documentary late last year with complaints about bias.
