Kristen Stewart has criticized Hollywood’s ‘phoniness’ regarding the belief that it has fixed its patriarchal structure.
Love Lies Bleeding star, Kristen Stewart has criticized Hollywood’s ‘phoniness’ regarding the belief that it has fixed its patriarchal structure. Stewart currently stars alongside Katy M. O’Brian in A24’s latest critical hit – directed by Rose Glass. Before becoming a frequent face in independent/indie cinema, Stewart was best known for her starring role in the Twilight franchise, alongside Robert Pattinson. In a recent interview for Porter magazine’s cover issue, Stewart expressed her frustration towards studios’ self-righteousness about becoming more inclusive, believing that there is still a long way for Hollywood to progress. Kristen said:
“[There’s a] thinking that we can check these little boxes, and then do away with the patriarchy, and how we’re all made of it. It’s easy for them to be like, ‘Look what we’re doing. We’re making Maggie Gyllenhaal’s movie! We’re making Margot Robbie’s movie!’ And you’re like, OK, cool. You’ve chosen four… And I’m in awe of those women, I love those women [but] it feels phony. If we’re congratulating each other for broadening perspective, when we haven’t really done enough, then we stop broadening.”

Kristen Stewart is also putting power into her own hands by moving from Love Lies Bleedingto direct her first feature film, titled The Chronology of Water. The actress described her film as “at times, hard to watch”, but promised it would be a “f*cking thrill ride”. Moving into the director’s chair also gives Stewart creative power to tell her own story, and express her frustrations about the industry on screen. About the upcoming project, Stewart said:
“My movie is about incest and periods and a woman violently repossessing her voice and body, and it is, at times, hard to watch… but it’s gonna be a f*cking thrill ride. And I think that’s commercial, but I don’t think that I have any gauge on what that means,” she laughs. “I think people would want to see that, but then… I think maybe people wanna watch movies about, like, Jesus and dogs.”
Kristen Stewart Is Surprised Love Lies Bleeding Got Made
Love Lies Bleeding has already proven to be another critical hit for production company A24. The film currently sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score (a strong 82%) not far behind. While A24 have made a name for themselves producing unusual, against the grain movies, Stewart said she was still surprised that Love Lies Bleeding got made, and that its concept worked. Stewart said:
“I think we were shocked that we could even get this made. Because it’s so weird. It’s violent and kind of irredeemable at times, but it makes you look; it’s scary. It’s confronting.”

The actress also described how the film’s biggest risk, its fluid, ever shifting tone, became one of its strongest assets, and went on to praise the director. Stewart continued:
“I kind of feel like, in the most dramatic moments of your life, it does get hilarious… It’s an odd mix of tones. That’s why Rose is so f*cking good. You’d think that would be clunky.”
