With roughly 14 months to go until Superman makes its way to the big screen, the first look at David Corenswet’s suit was finally revealed, which drew mixed reactions. From incorporating a mock neck, similar to 2011’s New 52 reboot suit, to bringing back the trunks, which were ditched in Zack Snyder’s version, the suit reveal has taken the internet by storm.
But while many are excited by these elements incorporated in the suit, some also shared skepticism towards it, including long-time Zack Snyder collaborator Clay Staub.
Long-Time Zack Snyder Collaborator Shared His Criticism Regarding the Suit Reveal
In the suit reveal, David Corenswet can be seen sitting in a pose similar to how artist Frank Quitely often interprets Superman in All-Star Superman, one of the major inspirations for this adaptation. Furthermore, James Gunn clarified that there was no tinkering whatsoever, and the photo was shot by his long-time set photographer Jessica Miglio. But following the bold choices incorporated in the suit, from the trunk to the mock neck, the reception to the first reveal has been pretty divisive.

Clay Staub, who served as a second-unit director on many Zack Snyder projects, including Justice League, starring Henry Cavill, took to X to slam the official first look of the new Superman suit. Staub criticized the layout and Corenswet’s pose, stating that it ends up “making the suit chest and arms look bulky and rubbery,” which he stressed wasn’t the best idea for the suit reveal.
He further lambasted the reveal, stressing, “If the metaphor is the New Man/New Suit or Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps…then both failed.” However, Staub did clarify that he has no problem with Corenswet and the potential narrative for the adaptation, stating it could turn out great.
David Corenswet Initially Failed to Make a Lasting Impact on James Gunn
A few weeks ago, rumors started to emerge, claiming that the Superman star once auditioned for the part of Adam Warlock in the threequel, which ended up going to Will Poulter. And on asked if this was true, James Gunn confirmed it.
