After a first trailer that raised more doubts than interest in the movie, the first reactions were not entirely positive. Currently, the film, which stars Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, Sydney Sweeney and Celeste O’Connor, has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is expected to gross between $30 and $35 million at the box office.
What are critics saying about ‘Madame Web’?
With its Rotten Tomatoes score, you can expect equally scathing reviews, and we’ve rounded up some of them.
The Hollywood Reporter’s review by Lovia Gyarkye calls it “an airless and stilted endeavor driven by a mechanical script. For his part, Rolling Stone’s David Fear has a tough start, commenting on the title, “‘Madame Web’ Isn’t as Bad As You’ve Heard. It’s So Much Worse,” with a comment as harsh and blunt as “‘It’s the Cats: The Movie of Superhero Movies.” Meanwhile, Variety’s Peter Debruge notes that “the script is confusing, the action stale and the visual effects cheap,” and that it “feels like a throwback to the kind of unimaginative superhero movies Hollywood produced before Marvel got its act together.”
