Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige breaks his silence on the reports about Anthony and Joe Russo coming back to direct Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. While The Multiverse Saga has been dealing with some creative shifts over the last two years, Marvel Studios remains committed to finishing the arc with Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. One of the reports that sparked a lot of hype recently was the news of the Russo brothers potentially directing Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Not long after it was reported that the Russo brothers are in early talks to helm Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars, Feige was asked by Inverse about how true the news was about the directing duo coming back to Marvel Studios. While joking about there always being different names up in the air for the Avengers movies, Feige said the following:
No I can’t comment on it except to say it was somebody else a couple of weeks ago and I look forward to seeing who it is going to be next week. We’ll see.
What Does Kevin Feige’s Avengers 5 & 6 Comments Mean For The Russo Brothers?
Negotiations Are Likely Not Finalized Yet.
Since Marvel Studios has a Hall H panel set for San Diego Comic-Con next week, it would be massive if they had a deal worked out by then, perhaps to bring the Russo brothers out on stage to announce their return to the MCU.
Despite Feige’s comments, it doesn’t necessarily mean the Russo brothers are not directing Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars. Anyone who has followed Feige throughout the MCU’s entire run is aware that he normally doesn’t comment on major things like directing gigs until something is either finalized or not happening at all. It’s key to remember that just because a trade breaks a story, it doesn’t always mean that it came directly from Marvel Studios themselves, as it’s the publication getting the word through sources, hence why many stories have a lot of “declined to comment” notes.
Avengers 5 may be dropping Kang, which means the MCU is faced with replacing its initially planned story. Thankfully, there’s one glaring opportunity.
What may be happening in this situation is that the Russo directors and Marvel Studios/Disney are still in the negotiating stage of the early talks, which is why it would be premature of Feige to say anything at this point. Once they are fully committed to directing Avengers 5 and Avengers: Endgame, that is when Marvel Studios will be ready to speak more about it. Whether that is through Marvel Studios’ social media pages or one of the trades remains to be seen.
