The first The Devil Wears Prada was released in 2006. It followed a recent college graduate — and journalist — named Andy (Hathaway) after she landed a job as an assistant at the prestigious New York City fashion magazine Runway. She soon learns that the job isn’t as glamorous as it seems, because her boss, Miranda Priestly (Streep) might just be a devil wearing Prada.

The film earned $326.7 million at the box office and is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name. It is also rumored to be based on how Anna Wintour treats her assistants at Vogue, since Weisberger herself once worked as an assistant there. Weisberger and Wintour have never confirmed these rumors, but Wintour did say that if they ever made a movie based on her life, she would want Streep to play her.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is supposed to follow Miranda Priestly (Streep) as she deals with the downward decline of traditional magazine publishing and must turn to her former assistant turned executive, Emily Charlton (Blunt), for help. The plot has yet to be officially confirmed as of publication.

Who is going to star in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’?

According to an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly, Hathaway, Steep, Blunt and Tucci are all set to star in the sequel, which is supposedly going to be written by the original screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna and directed by David Frankel.

It’s not shocking that Streep is returning to the film franchise though, because back in 2012 the actress said of a possible sequel, “Sure, I mean, I’d have to lose the f–king weight, but I would do that, yeah.”

Hathaway, though, had a different outlook on the sequel, telling E! News in March of 2024 that, “I don’t think a continuation of that story is probably ever gonna happen … .Let’s just keep the thing that we all agree with love.”

Blunt seems to share similar thoughts, telling People in 2018, “I almost hope it doesn’t [happen] because I think sometimes when you sequel everything kind of dilutes how special the original is.”

Right now, there is no set release date for The Devil Wears Prada 2. There is also no official confirmation from the cast or crew if they are officially working on the film.
