“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty, Leslie Sloane told PEOPLE. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Doherty was open about her battles with cancer throughout the 2010s, receiving her first diagnosis in March 2015 when she was told she had breast cancer after a delayed diagnosis due to legal troubles saw the disease spread before it was discovered.
Then in August 2016, she revealed her prognosis was years to life once the condition reached her lymph nodes before producing a remarkable recover within 12 months when she revealed she was in remission.
That allowed her to rejoin a reboot of Beverly Hills 90210 alongside Jason Priestley, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling from the original cast before she revealed the disease was back in 2020.
Then told it was stage four, she admitted she was terrified of what she was facing but she kept fighting and in June 2023, sadly confessed the cancer had reached her brain as she said, “”But that fear…. The turmoil….. the timing of it all…. This is what cancer can look like,” revealing the news.
She is survived by her mother and her brother. She did not have children.
How does cancer spread?
Cancer spreads through a process called metastasis, where cancer cells break away from the primary tumor and travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to other parts of the body.
Once these cells reach a new location, they can invade surrounding tissues and form new tumors. Metastasis involves complex interactions between cancer cells and the body’s normal cells and tissues.
Factors influencing metastasis include the cancer type, genetic mutations within the cancer cells, and the body’s immune response. Understanding and controlling metastasis are crucial in developing effective treatments to manage and potentially cure cancer.
