South African musician Toya Delazy says she wishes she did not feature Cassper Nyovest on her 2015 hit song, My City, as she says he is a vile person as the rapper did not return the favour later when he got famous.

My City was released at the height of Delazy’s fame while Nyovest’s own career was only then getting off the ground.

Posting on X, Delazy, real name Latoya Nontokozo Buthelezi, the granddaughter of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, said she does not listen to the song anymore and wishes she had collaborated with Cassper’s late rival, AKA, instead.

“No lie, I wish I didn’t collab with that kid. I can’t listen to it. It was a waste of a good song, but I was young and wasn’t thinking. I should have followed Sony’s direction with this one; my heart was too big, and I gave a chance to a vile person.”

Delazy said the atmosphere created by the feud between AKA and Cassper stifled a lot of careers.

“I was about unity when I made that song. Hence, I did it. But if someone doesn’t find nobility important, they make grave mistakes. The worst time to be in the industry was when folk were beefing; it was the helm of self-hate.

“That broke a lot of talent; it’s extremely discouraging to be forced to compete when music is about different experiences and stories. The blanket experience is forever commodifying dreams,” she wrote.

Toya has previously claimed she was instrumental in Cassper’s success, although she was never credited for it.

“We got Cassper his first flight in his life to Cape Town to record with us, lots of us put in for him to be where he is, but because we are women, it’s overlooked,” she said.

“That collaboration went to be the biggest, and not once did he remember me when sh*t was popping, bruh, every single,” she said.

“Fill up, they were singing my song at the stadiums, when we were available and in the country, and that shot hurt my career a lot. As a youngling, that sh*t broke me, took me years to recover. Actually, worst experience, sadly, I wish I had a different story,” she concluded. Telly Africa
