SUMMARY
Elizabeth Olsen’s returned to her iconic role of Scarlet Witch after being spotted last in Doctor Strange 2.
The fans didn’t expect such a banger of a return in the fifth episode of Marvel’s What If…? Season 2.
The internet has been overtaken by the ardent fans of the MCU who are excited to watch her in the live action universe as well.
The fans couldn’t hold back their excitement as Elizabeth Olsen finally returned to the MCU. After her apparent death in Doctor Strange 2, Olsen returned to her iconic role in the latest What If…? Season 2 episode. Earlier, a series of concerning remarks made her possibility for return to the canonical MCU very doubtful, but looks like the animated show has made it possible.
Scarlet Witch
Elizabeth Olsen made her debut as the Scarlet Witch in the post-credit scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Later she had a steady evolution in the Universe becoming one of the strongest and fan-favorite characters. However, MCU’s Phase 5 took Wanda’s character in a different direction and turned her into one of the most interesting villains.
Wanda Maximoff’s villain arc also ended with her redemption at Mount Wundagore in Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness. Since then, the actress has never revealed clearly if she would return to the MCU. But MCU’s animated Disney+ show made it possible by introducing us to a new variant of the character.
How did Elizabeth Olsen return to her MCU role?
In the latest episode of What If…?, we were presented with a reality where Steve Rogers wore the Hydra Stomper suit and the continuation of the first episode of Season 1. However, Captain Carter had to go against him after Rogers’ armor was corrupted by the Soviet Red Room. A brutal combat was shown between Peggy and Natasha against the Red Room Black Widows. However, what followed next was more strange than ever.
Following Steve Rogers’ sacrifice to destroy Red Room’s ship as Peggy Carter plans to go on a quest for him, something very strange takes place. Even the Watcher was not prepared to see Peggy Carter being transported to another dimension through Red Cracks appearing on the floor. It would not be hard for the MCU fans to figure out who can be responsible for magical Red stuff.
Captain Carter being transported to another reality in What If…? Season 2
In the very next scene, we spot Captain Carter in an alternate reality where we are surprised to see variants of Nick Fury and Elizabeth Olsen‘s Scarlet Witch. From their attires, it could be understood that they were from the Elizabethan era. It was already announced that this season would give us a story of Avengers 1602, inspired by Neil Gaiman’s comics.
The ending of the fifth episode made it pivotal for the series’ eighth “What If… the Avengers Assembled in 1602?”. We would also be introduced to more Elizabethan variants of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the 1602 episode. But it was Elizabeth Olsen’s return that intrigued the audience most. They took over the internet to express their joy and excitement.
The Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange 2
The MCU focused a lot on the character of Wanda Maximoff in Phase 5 with projects like WandaVision and Doctor Strange 2. Following the Benedict Cumberbatch movie, we are yet to know the whereabouts of the character. Although her character died in Mount Wundagore, the ardent comic book fans never believed in it.
On top of it, in a universe like the MCU, deaths aren’t so easy. There are always resurrections and alternate versions for characters to return. The internet went frenzy when Elizabeth Olsen also returned to play her alternate version in the MCU. We have collected certain internet reactions to show how the fans were overjoyed to see Scarlet Witch once again.
It will be exciting to see how this alternate Wanda’s character plays out in Season 2 of the Disney+ series. However, the fans would be more excited to see if Scarlet Witch makes a comeback in the canonical universe. Many fans are also of the notion that the character might also appear in the upcoming Agatha series.
Agatha: Darkhold Diaries will be released sometime in early 2024 on Disney+ while What If…? Season 2 can be streamed on Disney+ with a new episode released daily.
