“Inside Out 2 Surpasses Fan-Favorite to Become Pixar’s Top-Grossing Film Ever!”

Joy happily welcomes a nervous Anxiety in Inside Out 2

Pixar and its parent company, Disney, are surely having a day filled with many emotions as Inside Out 2 has surpassed yet another major milestone. The highly-anticipated sequel has beaten a fan-favorite film to become Pixar’s biggest film ever.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Inside Out 2 beat the reigning champion, Incredibles 2, at the box office, on its way to becoming the biggest Pixar film. Inside Out 2 follows the original film, which premiered in 2015. The first installment was very successful, earning $850.3 million at the box office and adding $112.2 million to the mix from home market performance (via The Numbers). But it didn’t get anywhere close to its sequel.

Sadness, Joy, Anger, Disgust, and Fear in Inside Out 2

Inside Out 2 has officially beaten Minions with its latest box office achievement.

Inside Out 2 has just finished Tuesday with $1.251 billion worldwide, beating Incredibles 2, which had a theater run of $1.242 billion. Overall, Inside Out 2 is in fourth place on the list of top-grossing animated films. However, its run is not over yet, and it might beat Disney’s 2014’s Frozen, which had a run of $1.274 billion and could also reach Illumination and Universal’s 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $1.361 billion at the worldwide box office.

There is one film that might not beat in its run, and it’s another sequel. The only film that might be just too far from reach is 2019’s Frozen II, which earned $1.451 billion. However, Inside Out 2 still hasn’t premiered in Japan, where it could add just enough to jump ahead of the No. 2 spot, or, why not, channel all of its emotions towards the No. 1 spot.

Joy dances in Inside Out 2

A Look at All of Inside Out 2’s Records

Inside Out 2 practically saved the 2024 box office, becoming this year’s biggest film after beating Dune: Part Two, which grossed $710.8 million. The animated film appealed both to children, teenagers, and adults, as it introduced new emotions and tapped into what it means to be a teenager. Becoming this year’s biggest film (so far) also came with some broken records.

While it did manage to beat Incredibles 2‘s all-time gross, the film opened just behind the animated film, with $153.2 million at the domestic box office, compared to Incredibles 2’s $182.6 million. It also had the biggest opening for an animated film worldwide, the biggest animated opening for Disney since Covid-19, and the first film to gain more than $100 million on the domestic market on its opening week since 2023’s Barbie, among other records. Disney proved that good things take time, but its recent success might convince studio heads to greenlight Inside Out 3.

Inside Out 2 is currently out in theaters.
