Harry Kane has shown his true colours with an interview after England’s Euro 2024 defeat.
The Three Lions’ hearts were broken in Germany when Mikel Oyarzabal poked the ball past Jordan Pickford in the 85th minute. Kane wasn’t on the pitch for the winner, after being hooked on the hour mark for semi-final hero Ollie Watkins.
When speaking to ITV after the game, Kane was quizzed on how he felt his tournament had gone. And he didn’t let his personal disappointment cloud his classy comments when quizzed on the game and manager Gareth Southgate’s future.
He said: “It’s hard to put into words how we’re all feeling right now. Tough game. We did well to get back into the game and struggled to build on that. To concede late on is really tough to take.
“We’ve been coming from behind all tournament, we’ve got it in the locker. We didn’t take the next step and win it.
Harry Kane was hooked in the 60th minute by Gareth Southgate
“In the first half, we struggled. We couldn’t keep the ball. Second half was better and we got the goal. We got caught with a cross and that’s the final.
“It’s an opportunity missed. These finals aren’t easy to get to. You have to take it when it comes and we haven’t done it again. It’s extremely painful and it’ll hurt for a long time. Gareth [Southgate] will go away and take time to decide. We wanted to win it for him.”
It’s the second tournament in which the Three Lions have fallen short in the final – having also lost to Italy in the final of Euro 2020. Nico Williams had broken the deadlock, 69 seconds into the second-half.
Cole Palmer had fired back for the Three Lions, but all his good work was undone by Oyarzabal – who sent the Spanish fans wild. It’s been a tournament of dreams for Spain, who won all seven of their games in Germany
