A former vegan YouTube star has experienced furious backlash from her followers after she revealed she followed the carnivore diet for 30 days, which entails eating only animal products.
Alyse Parker, who garnered more than 700,000 subscribers by sharing her eating and exercise tips, shared a video this week detailing her 30 days on the carnivore diet.
In the video, the YouTuber, who is originally from Connecticut, said she was taking on the challenge to better understand people who follow other diets, but the dramatic change only infuriated her following.
Controversial: Alyse Parker, a former plant-based YouTuber, took on an extreme challenge by eating only animal-based products for 30 days
Healthy: The diet excluded eating anything that wasn’t animal-based, including any vegetables, carbs, or fruits
Backlash: Commenters attacked the YouTuber for promoting the extreme challenge, especially after she pushed veganism for so long
Furious comments were posted on both the YouTube video and a picture on Instagram Parker shared of herself behind a plate holding a large steak.
Fans said they were left disappointed by the YouTuber’s decision to drop her vegan diet, which Parker followed for over almost five years, after she inspired them to make the change to being plant-based.
‘Being vegan you’d think you’d understand the effects of eating meat on our bodies & more importantly our environment?? you lost all my respect as well,’ one person commented following the video.
These sentiments were shared with others, with another follower writing: ‘I’m so sorry that you changed your mind about veganism. You were my inspiration at first and now you support the exact opposite.’
Another follower implored the YouTuber to stop promoting ‘extreme dieting’ to her viewers.
‘Can we stop pushing extreme dieting and veiling it as wellness and transformation,’ the commenter wrote, adding: ‘It’s toxic.’
Parker shared at the beginning of her video that she changed from full veganism because she knew ‘very well what it’s like to lose myself in the identity of a diet culture and to lose true open-mindedness,’ she said.
Difficult decision: Parker built her following of more than 700,000 subscribers largely while promoting her vegan diet. This has all changed after she stopped being vegan in March
Testing it out: She filmed herself following the carnivore diet for 30 days, and she said at the end she actually felt better with her digestion
Frustrated: The carnivore challenge might be one of Parker’s most controversial ones to date
Testing out the carnivore diet for 30 days was her way to experience more open-mindedness towards those with different eating habits from her own.
Plus, she felt it would teach her to ‘understand rather than judge.’
Footage then follows Parker through the 30 days where she would only eat meat, fish, and eggs to complete the challenge.
This change in diet was not a complete shock to her system, though, because the YouTuber informed followers she had been incorporating more animal products into her diet in the last year.
‘Before starting this challenge I was eating a pretty balanced diet,’ she explained. This included a mixture of meats, vegetables, carbs, and other animal products.
She made an official announcement in March 2019 about dropping her vegan diet, but the 30 day carnivore challenge still shocked her following.
Time to cook: Footage showed Parker cooking and eating different plant-based meals. Although she had cravings for other foods, she pushed on and completed the challenge
Her abs: ‘This may sound surprising but my digestion was honestly totally fine,’ she said. ‘In fact, it was way better than when I was vegan’
Before and after: Besides experiencing better digestion, Parker also said she lost 2lbs. during the 30 days
No difference: Otherwise, the YouTuber said she didn’t notice much change to her overall physique while on the diet
Parker found the carnivore diet actually helped her digestive system, admitting the results might be shocking to her followers.
‘This may sound surprising but my digestion was honestly totally fine,’ she said. ‘In fact, it was way better than when I was vegan.’
Not only did Parker say her digestive system improved over the 30 days, but she also reported a loss of 2lbs. on the diet and claimed to feeling ‘mentally clear’ during the time period. Her energy was also ‘more stable’ during the 30 days.
Hardly any changes were noticed to Parker’s physique.
Following the diet for 30 days inspired the YouTuber, much to some of her followers dismay, to incorporate more animal products into her daily meals.
‘I’m not going to continue with this 100 per cent,’ she said, ‘but I did notice enough benefits eating this way to want to continue to eat mostly animal foods.’
Parker previously has followed other extreme challenges — including going 30 days without washing her hair, a full year without wearing deodorant, and 30 days without using social media.
But her carnivore challenge might be the most controversial yet with her followers remaining divided on where they stood with the extreme diet.
